Title

Discussion on delinquent tax accounts

Body

SUMMARY:

Following the issues raised by Randall Kidwell on notifications on delinquent tax accounts, staff has researched his issue and it appears that the City had already sent out delinquent notices to the previous property owner prior to Mr. Kidwell purchasing the property.  It is believed that the those responsible for the closing on the property failed to pick up the delinquent taxes.  The City only receives new ownership information yearly when the tax rolls are prepared, which is July or August.

Delinquent property tax notices are sent out on March 1 twice before the delinquent tax is turned over to the Clerk and Master’s Office.  They are mailed to the addresses on file at the Assessor’s Office, which is the source of the ownership information on the tax rolls.  If they are not returned by the post office, we have no indication that they were not received by the proper person.
